Scrapping Fairy Tales Design Quest - Week 3: Freebie!

I'm still in for week 3!

This challenge is really not an elimination contest. All entries who qualify will get a set of CU elements as our prize. And to inspire us to complete all 4 weeks of challenges, we will get bonus CU pack if we complete all 4 challenges.

The challenge for week 3 is all about stars. All elements MUST have at least one star in it. That was a challenge for me.

Anyway, here is my entry for this week:

You can also snag all the great minis from the other participants in the gallery so make sure you visit!

Scrapping Fairy Tales Design Quest 2012 - Week 1

This October, I joined Scrapping Fairytales' Design Quest. This is my first design contest :) There was a design contest at theStudio last month, held at the same time as the Layout Artist Competition. But I wanted to do the Layout Artist Competition more and I know I will only have time to dedicate to one so I passed.

Anyway, for Week 1, we were given 3 color palettes to choose from. We are to create a mini-kit using our selected palette based on a fairy tale bad guy or scary guys in general. I was trying to decide whether to use The Frog Princess or Tangled as my theme. Andrea loves those 2 at the moment so we are always watching those at home.

Tangled won, and in the story, the bad guy is Mother Gothel, Rapunzel's witch "mother". Here is my kit:

The challenge only called for 8 unique elements and I made more than 8 so I am giving you the extra elements I made as an add-on.

If you make any layouts using my kit, I would love to see it! Enjoy :)

I submitted to Scrapping Fairytales Create a Fairy Tale Challenge last month. This kit was inspired by one of the places we visited before called Tagaytay Highlands. Some of the elements and papers in this kit were from our photos from that trip.

September!! (with freebie)

"...wake me up when September ends..."

You know that song? I've always wanted to ask the song writer... WHY WHY WHY??? September is a great month! I wake up to Christmas songs every first of September because Christmas season in my country unofficially starts on September.

And the start of a new month always means NEW CHALLENGES! Ok so feel free to think that I have no life. Between work and home, I actually don't have one ;) I don't really mind. I love both work and home, and whatever extra time I have left, I spend on digital scrapbooking which I love too!

To kick off the month of September here is a freebie I made last month for the Create a Fairytale Challenge over at Scrapping Fairytales. You can now download this mini-kit from my Facebook page.

Click here to go to my Facebook page. Download is available at the "Exclusive" section.
And here is my first layout for September. One of the designers I CT for, Mariscrap, is participating in DST's blogtrain and their theme for this month is Inspire Me. Here is a preview of what you can get from Mariscrap:

News and new freebies!

So I've been stalking CT call threads at forums lately. I still have a full-time job though, so I usually only go for One-kit Calls. But the truth is, I'm always hoping, and hoping and hoping, that one of my favorite designers will post a CT call so that I can have a chance to apply.

And what do you know, a few days ago, one of them did! *insert big smile here*

Notice the new blinkie on my sidebar? I am now part of Mariscrap's Creative Team. YEY! I actually made a couple of layouts for her a month ago for her Boston kit when I saw her One-kit Call at a forum. I can't wait to start working on her other kits!

On to other news...

Recently, I'm into text paths. Feli Designs' Wordart/Quote Challenge over at Digidesignresort this June really got to me.  I've checked a few tutorials online on how to make one and have been practicing. But so far, I've only done simple curve paths. I still need a LOT of practice before I can make more complex paths.

I'm also trying my hand at making my own elements using Photoshop. I still can't draw, but I can make simple elements using default shapes, and then "Liquifying" or "Warping" them to get them to look the shape I want. And in line with my drawing attempts, I have a new freebie for you!

And since my Facebook fan freebie is getting a little old, I decided to make a new one. I prepared a layered .psd template for my Facebook fans.

Enjoy! :)

Timeless - QP Freebie

Time for another freebie!

I am participating in Coolscrapsdigital's QP Contest for May. For this month, we were given this kit by EMS Arts to use:

Steampunk kit by EMS Arts
I admit, I don't go for Steampunk styles very much. I do not get it and I do not know how to use it. But a couple of months back, I downloaded some pretty steampunk clusters from another designer that I found interesting. So when I received the invite from Addie of Coolscrapsdigital to participate in this month's QP Contest with the given kit, I decided to give it a try.

Here's what I came up with:

I like how it turned out, considering I ditched 3 almost complete layouts before I finally got to this point. At first glance, it doesn't look very "steampunk" huh? Unless you look closer and notice the gears and rusted elements.

Oh and the photo... that's my mom as a teen-ager :)

And now for the freebie:

Freebie! Fairy Farm - PU kit

I've been falling behind on my challenges so I decided to prioritize those that um... came with a responsibility :)

Coolscrapsdigital has a "CU Pack for a Freebie" challenge every month, where they give all the participants a Commercial Use pack of elements (i.e. elements you can use to make kits or other commercial items that you can sell). For the challenge, you have to make a personal use item: either a kit, clusters, quick pages. I have skipped this challenge for a couple of months because designing takes a lot of time and I have difficulty coming up with a concept!

You can not download the free CU pack unless you plan to join the challenge. And well, for this month, I decided to try again and downloaded the pack. So I am honor-bound to participate :)

For this month's challenge, we were give this CU pack from Star Song Studio to use:

I love all that yellow! As a freebie-lover myself, I know from personal experience that I like free kits more than I like any other freebie like quick pages. So I decided to make a mini-kit. I still don't have the patience or time for a full kit.

And here is my kit, free for you to download and enjoy :)

5 papers (3600 x  3600 pixels in 300 dpi)

Photo Extraction Tutorial using Photoshop

Most of my digital scrapbooking layouts features made-up scenes using photos I extracted and other elements from digital scrapbooking kits. Though there are several ways to extract photos, let me share with you how I usually do it.

Those who have been following me for a while might not have realized it but I already provided a tutorial on this before: Creating a Silhouette Image Using Photoshop.

I have tweaked the instructions a bit to make it easier (I hope... at least I now find it easier... I hope you do too).

-oo0oo-

What you need for this project:
  • Photoshop CS3 or higher (I'm using Photoshop CS3)
  • A good computer, one that can handle working with graphics (slower machines will die when working with large hi resolution files, which digital scrapbooking elements usually are)
  • Basic knowledge of Photoshop
  • A good, clear photo of the object or person you want to extract.
 -oo0oo-

STEP 1: Open your photo in Photoshop.

For this tutorial, I am using the photo of a flower that we saw at Burnham Park on our recent trip to Baguio.

Step 2: Zoom in and enlarge your photo. This makes seeing the edges of your photo that you need to trace later easier.

I sometimes go as high as 200% photo enlargement, depending on the size of the photo I need to extract.

Step 3: Select the Polygonal Lasso Tool

To make sure you are using the correct Lasso tool, right click on the Lasso Tool icon. When the different types of available Lasso tools appear, select Polygonal Lasso Tool.

Step 4: Using the Polygonal Lasso Tool, click along the edges of your subject. Click first on one point along the edge of your subject. And then move a little along the edge of your subject and click again. This will give you smoother curved lines.

Keep doing this until you reach a point close to where you started. Double click near that point to close your shape.

Don't worry if your tracing is not perfect. On my example above, I purposefully traced inside my object and then outside my object. I will show you how to correct this on the next step.

Step 5: To add more areas of the photo, in case you made a mistake or closed your shape by double clicking too soon, select the Polygonal Lasso Tool, and then on the tool's settings on the bar above, select the option that says "Add to selection" (see where the arrow is pointing below).

After selecting "Add to selection", you can then trace along the edges of the area that you wish to add to your selection. To correct the mistake I made in Step 4, I traced along the lines I highlighted in red. Double click when you reach the point near where you started to close your shape. After you close your shape, you will see that the area I initially missed is not included in the selected area of my object (see area encircled in the image below).

Now for that other area where I included a lot of space outside the flower, on the tools settings on the bar above, click the icon that says "Remove from selection" when you hover over it (see where arrow is pointing on the image above). After choosing this setting, I traced along the edges of the area that needs to be removed from my selection. I highlighted the path I traced in the image above.

Double click when you reach the point close to where you started to close your shape. After closing your shape, you will see that the extra area has been removed from your selection.

Step 6: (Optional) Refine your edge. I say this is optional because depending on the quality of your image and the smoothness of the lines you traced along the edges of the object you wish to extract, you might not need this. One way to check is to click Refine Edge (will only appear if your Lasso Tool is still selected). On the photo above, Refine Edge is on the right-most side of the icons for removing and adding to selection.

Clicking Refine Edge will give you a closer look at what your extracted image now looks like. Check the edges. If they seem a little rough, increase the Feather value. Feather refers to the amount of blur on the edges of your image. I like my edges looking crisp so I try to use a lower value for Feather most of the time.

I usually only play with the Radius, Smooth and Feather values until I'm happy with how the edges of my object looks.

If you are already happy with how the edges of your object looks, click Ok.

Step 7: Copy your selected area. You can do this by going to Edit, and then choosing Copy, OR using keyboard shortcut CTRL + C.

Step 8: Open a new blank file. Go to File, then click New. After copying a selection, when you open a new file, the size will always be the exact same size of the area you just copied. On the Background Contents field, choose "Transparent".

Step 9: Paste your selected area. You can do this by either going to File, and then choosing Paste, OR using keyboard shortcut CTRL + V.

Step 10: Save your extracted image as a .PNG file.

And you have your extracted image which you can use for your digital projects. As an added bonus for checking out my tutorial, I will be giving away the image I extracted for this tutorial as commercial use items :)

I am including the extracted flower, and I'm throwing in a greyed out version which you can recolor and use for your projects.

Thank you for visiting today and I hope you have fun trying this out!
