Cabbage Patch Kids Hat

About a month ago, I saw an article on Yahoo! about crocheted Cabbage Patch Kids hats.

I started hunting around Ravelry and sure enough, I found a free pattern from Dearest Debi. You can check out the pattern at her blog. More than a month after, I finished mine.

Not the best photo but it was the best I have using my phone with my model twisting and turning and running off... Anyway, I think the hat looks better on babies that are less than a year old. It must be the cheeks factor. Andrea has lost her puffy baby cheeks look *sniff* *sniff*. My baby is all grown up and... and... ok, emo attack over :)

I finished some other crochet projects including a raglan-style top for me, yey!! I've worn it twice, only I haven't been able to take a photo. This new job is killing me! Not the work itself, mind you... but rather the commute to get to the office. Takes up so much time. I had to give up all my CT work *sniff* *sniff again* and I miss it. But with my new schedule, there really isn't much time to devote to creating digital scrapbook pages so it will have to go for a while. Here's me hoping I might have some time to dabble in it again in the future.

This is also the first time in my career that my office is not located near a mall. Hmmm... maybe that's not really right, but with the traffic in this area, the mall might have been located at another town for the time it takes for me to get there and back again. But I did discover an establishment located conveniently beside my office that gave birth to my new hobby/business idea.

Perfume-making!

The scents are inspired by the popular (and expensive!) signature scents. I am so proud to say that I now know the difference between cologne, body spray, eau de toilette and eau de parfum. Yey again! I decided to make the perfume grade kind, because I make it mostly for me and it lasts longer than eau de toilette. It's a little bit more expensive to make, but still way cheaper than buying signature scents. I sell what I don't use, and in the past 3 weeks I've been in business, I can say that this new venture is doing well. And my house (and my couch!) has never smelled so good.

Anyway, I hope I get more crafting time and posting time in the  near future. All work and no play makes me a very bored and cranky person.

Scrapbook

If you are into digital scrapbooking, have you had a chance to check out the Studio's 5000 Facebook Fan mini kit freebie? They are giving a really pretty winter-themed mini kit to celebrate and are hosting some challenges using the mini.

I made a layout for their Non-Winter Layout challenge... but I missed the deadline! I guess I forgot to note that the end of the challenge was last Wednesday and not the end of January. All good though, I had fun working on the mini and here is my layout:

Elements from Winter Ice collaboration mini kit from the Studio
Anyway, it's the 4th weekday of me staying at home and you know what I realized? I miss talking! Andrea is at school and then stays at my mom's all afternoon after school, our nanny is with her, and my husband is at work. That leaves me with no one to talk to all day. For 4 days! *sigh* On a good note, I was able to get some parts of the house clean, YEY! I made a note to myself that I will use this time off wisely. My goal was to clean one part/section of the house, AND finish one craft project per day. But I underestimated the state of mess my house was in... it's actually taking me one whole day to clean one section of the house. It took me a WHOLE day to finish cleaning and organizing the wall bookshelf. And I have another bookshelf just as big and just as messy and cluttered and dusty in the spare bedroom.

Ok, back to cleaning. It's Friday! And even though I am home all day, I do look forward to the weekend. I will have someone to talk to, YEY! (And I'm seeing some friends too!)

On Birthdays and Ageing...

Aside from getting tired more quickly, I really believe I stopped ageing at 23. With every birthday that passes, I still feel... ME.

And so my birthday this year came and went. I had several plans for that supposedly special day which I never really celebrate but all those went down the drain because my daughter got sick and I had to spend the day taking care of a sick and cranky toddler instead. And hubby, trying to cheer me up because I have been pretty depressed lately, came home late because he bought me a gift and he got stuck in traffic.

At the end of the day, before I fell asleep, I checked my email and guess what I found? I received birthday greetings from my digital scrapbooking forums AND some of the greetings came with coupons. Birthday gifts!

Here's me sharing my birthday gifts from the digital scrapbooking world:

From Scraps N Pieces: a coupon for one Store Collaboration kit. I picked this one:

From Gingerscraps, a set of Birthday coupons. YEY! I am going shopping soon!

From theStudio, a kit:

Thank you thank you so much!

To end this post, I would like to share an article I found a few months ago:

11 Things

My awesome blog friend Diane of Diane Writes tagged me in her post, and since I haven't participated in these activities for a while now, let's give it a go!

There are 11 questions I have to answer and after which I will tag 11 other blog friends to participate (when tagged, do not panic ladies, no pressure here... if you are not interested or you don't have time, I will understand).

Let the Q&A begin!

-oo0oo-

Q1: Do you have a favorite recipe? Which one?
Me: Um... errr... does this question mean my favorite recipe to make? If it does, then none. I can't cook :( But my husband does and I have a lot of favorites from his recipes like his Italian-style spaghetti which he says is inspired by a scene on one of the Godfather movies where one of the characters was cooking spaghetti (I haven't seen the movies in a long time so I can't remember the details). He cooked this for the first time after we watched the DVDs a few years ago.

Q2: How many blogs do you follow?
Me: 71 blogs, I just counted.

Q3: If you could be any character in a book or movie who would you be?
Me: Scarlett O' Hara! Love the movie, love the book, and love Vivien Leigh... hmmm... I think maybe I just want to be Vivien Leigh, haha.

Q4: What's your dream travel destination?
Me: Antarctica to see the Emperor penguins. Serious answer. Though it's something I will probably never get to do.

Q5: Do you have pets? Do you talk to them?
Nope, no pets. Every pet I have had, and my potted plants too, all died within a few months. Not sure why.

Q6: If you could have any job in the world, what would it be?
You all remember that guy whose job is to live on a resort island, explore it and then blog about it? If it was for just one day, I want to have his job.

Q7: Is there any food that you wouldn't eat no matter what?
Me: Hmmm... I'm not an adventurous eater so there are a lot. The first things that come to mind are 'Balut' and 'Bagoong' though.

Balut: Egg with a semi-formed chick inside 0_o (Photo credit)

Q8: 3 items you would take with you if you were left alone in a deserted island.
One - lip balm (can't live without one); Two - toothpaste; Three - moisturizing sun block.

Q9: Have you ever pretended to be someone else?
I don't think so... not really.

Q10: What's your dream item to find in a thrift store?
An intricate vintage locket in good condition, or a vintage jade ring... which I already found once but didn't get to buy because my husband won't let me saying we didn't know where it came from, who owned it, etc. It looked really, really old... and really, really haunted according to my husband *rolls eyes*

Q11: Food: Mexican, Italian or Japanese?
Italian.

-oo0oo-

Ok, now it's your turn!! I'm supposed to list 11 but I can't think of that many right now so I'll just list my friends and blog neighbors:

1. Divya of Jewels of Sayuri
2. Agy of Green Issues
3. Deepthi of My Art
4.  PC of Meijo's Joy
5. Ivy of Pensees and Privees
6. Hazel of The Best Things in Life Aren't Things
7. Jill of Creating My Way to Success

Again, no pressure ladies! Have a great day! And thanks Diane for tagging me :)

Free Quick Page: Sweetness

I participated in another contest yet again at Coolscrapsdigital, the QP Contest for February.

For this contest, we were given this kit:

The task is to create a Quick Page freebie from the elements of this kit only. And here is my Quick Page.

There are a lot of other really pretty Quick Page templates on the forums, in case you're interested.

Now that that's over and done with... I want to share something that dissipated all negative energy that has been surrounding me for the past weeks. And here it is... Today, I was able to fit in my pre-maternity jeans again. YES!!! After 2 years!!! A couple of friends asked me if I lost weight, and though I doubted it, I decided to try some of my old jeans last night when I got home to check. I was in a mild state of shock when I was actually able to close the button.

Anyway, that's it for this week for me. I have to do general cleaning at home tomorrow... Aaarrggh! Hate it but it has to be done. Hope you guys enjoy your weekend!

Not your regular working day

The Philippines was hit by Typhoon Pedring, international name Typhoon Nesat, yesterday.

This video is not mine, I just got it from YouTube. This is in the city of Manila, and that is the Manila Bay. I live farther inland, and fortunately, my house is not located near any dam or any body of water. My family is safe. Thank you to all my blog friends who sent their well-wishes.

The area immediately beside the Manila Bay is called Baywalk. And beside Baywalk is Roxas Boulevard. The US Embassy in Manila is on Roxas Boulevard.

And this is Roxas Boulevard.

There used to be a lot of small bars and restaurants along Baywalk. It was a nice place to hang out in the evenings after work. But they were cleared a few years ago when a new mayor took his seat. Even without the restaurants and bars, it's still a nice place for a walk.

Not anymore for a while I guess. Those decorative concrete blocks inlaid on the sidewalk were dislodged when they were hit with the waves.

While all of this was happening... I was on my way to work. My husband was still asleep when I left the house and when he woke up, he asked me why I even left the house. My mom called pretty much asking me the same thing. I don't know what I was thinking... I guess I was thinking it was just another stormy day and work is rarely cancelled due to those.

My house is located on a small street, framed by tall houses so when I went outside, the street is protected from the strong winds. I can hear the winds howling when I was in our bedroom on the 2nd floor, but when I went outside, it looked peaceful enough so I decided to walk to the main road to wait for a cab. When I got to the main road, I noticed very few vehicles... which is rare during this time of day. The first thought that crossed my mind was... "Yey!!! No traffic!!".

As my cab was making it's way to my office, that's when I started noticing that the small trees along the road was bent almost halfway down due to the strong wind. But since there we weren't passing through any flooded streets, I didn't think much about it. The Philippines is hit with typhoons every month... or every few weeks even, during the monsoon season which starts around June and lasts around November... or December... or January... or February... even until March. It used to be just around October but lately, we don't know anymore.

I made it to the office safe and sound. I found out that most of my officemates opted to stay at home. I had meetings to attend yesterday morning you see... and THOSE were what I was thinking about. When I got to the office, my manager who is based in Taiwan, asked me to go home :-/ I had stuff to finish so I ended up staying until 4PM.

And today? The sky is still overcast... strong winds are still blowing, though not as strong as yesterday... and it's still raining. But today... today is just another regular working day.

NOTE: As I write this, I found out that we are bracing for another typhoon... Typhoon Quiel, which is scheduled to hit us within 24 hours.

My Thoughts on Language

Last June, my niece started pre-school in a Montessori school located at one of the more affluent neighborhoods near our house. I chose that school because it made a good impression on me and that's where I plan to send Andrea next year. My mom, my sister and I want them to go to the same school. My mom went with my niece that first day and after class, my mom called me to tell me that ALL kids in that school speaks English only. No one can speak in Filipino except my niece.

That made me think twice... thrice... several times... about whether I want to send my daughter to an environment like that. Most parents here teach their kids English first. I understand the need to learn English. English is the language most used to teach in our schools here. And when you enter the corporate workforce, command of the English language is a must with everything going global nowadays. English is a language we eventually learn. But we (my family at least) use Filipino at home. Filipino is our national language and as Filipinos, I strongly believe that we should know our own language.

For a while now, speaking English here has become a sign of belonging to the "upper class". And sometimes, this comes with arrogance that is really irritating. It has become  "cool" for Filipinos to not know or worse, speak bad Filipino, and be more fluent in English. And it's sad, and annoying really, when you hear some Filipinos try to fake being bad at the Filipino language to try to appear cool. Yes, seriously, some people do that... and when you are a native Filipino speaker, you can tell. When babies are born, parents speak to their babies in English only. I have heard that in some homes, speaking in Filipino is not allowed. I do not judge those parents. They have their reasons. I just think it's sad that the new generation will never get to know the language that is part of  our identity as a people. That is not how I want to raise my daughter.

Every year in August, we celebrate Buwan ng Wika (Language Month) here in the Philippines. In schools they usually have a program where children dress up in traditional Philippine costumes and recite poems or sing songs in Filipino. How ironic is it that just a few days ago, this article came out in one of the biggest newspapers here:

--do not click the link though--
--article deleted already--

I just wanted to share the original link but after getting several feedback from a lot of outraged people, the newspaper decided to pull the article. I was able to get a screenshot to share with my husband before they pulled it though.

Or you can send me an email if you want a document copy to read better.

Though some of what was said about Filipino is true (i.e. Filipino being its own system, with its own grammar, semantics, sounds, even symbols. But more significantly, it was its own way of reading, writing, and thinking. There are ideas and concepts unique to Filipino that can never be translated into another.), the general tone of the article feels wrong and elitist. My initial impression was that here is someone who wants people to think of him as elite because he speaks English. But I have read the article over and over and I give the author the benefit of the doubt. As one of my friends said in Twitter, he might be trying to elicit change in how we use and view our language. Was he trying to be sarcastic? Probably. He might not just have been able to get his message across very clearly. Benefit of the doubt. Reading the article's conclusion made my temper flare a bit again... but benefit of the doubt.

Contrary to what the author says, we don't just use Filipino because we are "forced to relate with the tinderas (Janelle: people who sell food or other small items on the street or from small neighborhood stores) and the manongs (Janelle: technically a term of respect for an older male in Bisaya, another major dialect used commonly in southern Philippines, but is also a term that has gained popularity as a generic name used to call drivers, especially public transport drivers when you don't know their names) and the katulongs (Janelle: maids, housekeepers) of this world. If we wanted to communicate to these people — or otherwise avoid being mugged on the jeepney". Or because it is the language "used to speak with my cousins and uncles and grandparents in the province". It's not merely a "street language". It's the language I use to communicate with my daughter. I call her Anak, the Filipino term for offspring derived from the Malaysian language, I think. When I want to thank someone, I say Salamat or Salamat po, Filipino for "Thank you". I add "po" at the end of my sentences as a sign of respect when I speak to my elders. Instead of "Mommy" and "Daddy", some of my friends call their parents "Nanay" and "Tatay". I talk to my friends in Filipino, and it's much more fun sharing stories this way than using English.
I do not deny the importance of the English language in our daily lives as Filipinos. We read books in English. We watch TV shows and movies in English. More reference materials are available in English than in any other language. I work for a transnational company and in the course of my work every day, I talk to my officemates located in Taiwan or Ireland or Japan or the US. We use English. As I'm sure all companies who are trying to go global. So there is truth in the author's statement that Filipino is not the "language of the classroom and the laboratory, nor the language of the boardroom, the court room, or the operating room". But this should not diminish our respect for our native language.

This last part is what must have struck a chord with a lot of the people who read this:

"I may be disconnected from my being Filipino, but with a tongue of privilege I will always have my connections. So I have my education to thank for making English my mother language."

"Tongue of privilege"... what does that even mean? And this too, "language of the learned". Too elitist. Too snobbish. And with his "tongue of privilege", he will always have his connections... to what I wonder?

My Weekend Discovery!

This is a quick sharing post to let you guys know that I'm still here. I'm sorry for the lack of craft posts since this is a craft blog. It's just that there have been so much stress and negativity along the fringes of my personal life that  I haven't really been in a creative mood for a while. And the weather here is not helping. After being terribly hot all day... it suddenly started raining hard... AGAIN. Rain always puts me an... errr... melancholy mood. And somehow I found that funny. Anyway I hope to get over this creative slump soon. And I just discovered something that will help me with that.

I discovered a new fabric store that sells cotton fabric in various prints that I LOVE! And plus plus PLUS points... they have a branch at the mall I always go to. *giddy* *giddy* *giddy* If you're wondering why this is a big deal, well... I remember my professor in one of my graduate classes told me that the Philippines textile industry is dead. We don't produce fabric anymore... we import. And there are very few mainstream stores that sell fabric. There are a couple of big chains that have branches at the mall but choices are always limited. Very very few choices for printed cotton... and in our humid climate, cotton is my fabric of choice for my daughter's clothes. If you want to hunt for good fabric... you have to endure traffic and brave the crowds at one of the streets in Quiapo, Manila... Ylaya Street. I haven't been there yet... I passed by it once... I didn't realize it was a street because it was so crowded and full of people. Maybe one of these days, I will try to go there.

So anyway, I remember passing by this new small fabric store at an out-of-the-way area of the mall after if just opened a few months ago. When I first visited the store, it didn't make a good impression because it was small... and initially, their choices were limited. Last night, I decided to make a quick check because I needed white and red polka dot fabric to finish a dress for Andrea and couldn't find any anywhere else. Am I glad I did.

The store is called Cotton Stuff and it's located near the left side entrance of SM North EDSA (Hi Kelley! I remember you once asked me where I get my fabric in Manila :). They just sell cotton fabric but they have a wide range of selection. Price is pretty standard too. P150 - 180 per yard (approx $3.50-4.50). Not sure if that's supposed to be cheap or expensive... but whatever. Good enough for me. I wanted to buy them all!! If I didn't have my husband with me, I'm sure I would have run up quite a bit of credit card debt. But since he frowns at credit card purchases... I had to keep my spending within my cash on hand.

It took me a while to choose which ones to get.

Daddy and Andrea patiently waiting for mommy to pick something.
I had to keep reassuring myself that I can always go back when I need more.

Here's a little preview of the project I finished using one of the fabrics I bought.

Details and more photos of the dress on Monday! Happy weekend everyone!

Nominated for Hubby's Popular Project

I woke up this morning dead tired. Do you ever feel that way? Andrea, at 18 months, still wakes up a few times during the night wanting her bottle so I still wake up to feed her. For a few minutes after I opened my eyes, I contemplated not going to work but then I remembered this task we had to do that starts today and ends tomorrow and well... off to work I went.

Then I opened my email and saw that...

Ok so the project nominated wasn't really mine... it's my husband's Wooden Hut Doll House project... but I guess it's conjugal so it's mine as well *wink*. I can't wait to tell my husband later when I get home! I can pop him the link now but I want to see his face when I show it to him on the laptop later tonight. I'm sure he will be excited (but will try hard not to show me but I will know anyway, haha).

Voting goes on until this weekend so head on over to Lamb Around to check out the other projects and vote (voting is on her side bar). I'm not going to ask you to vote for me... but you know, vote for the project that you like best. No pressure :)

Then I checked my other comments and saw that I was also featured over at Stephanie Lynn's Under the Table and Dreaming. She featured not one but TWO of my projects for the same week! Again... one is my husband's popular Wooden Hut Doll House project but we already established that it's conjugal so... Yey, I have 2 projects featured! I can't wait to show this to him later too.

Weekend of Friends, Volcanos, Velvet Dresses... oh, and a Pillow Fort

Last Friday, I met up with some of my girl friends from college. We've known each other since freshman year and we were stuck lived in the same dorm for 4 years. We managed to keep in touch all this time, always keeping updated with each others lives. We are all married-with-one-kid now. It's difficult for us to meet up because 2 of them live up north in Baguio which means a 5-hour drive from Manila. We visit them though. Baguio is a beautiful province, mountains all around, trees, flowers, cool climate (it's the only area in the Philippines that experienced something like snow last December).
Flower Festival in Baguio, 2002, shortly after college.
I can't remember when we were last together... and looking at the photos... I think it was 2002. Some of us met with each other after that (like I was in Baguio again for the Flower Festival in 2009) but I think not all 4 of us together.

And now, here we are (they look exactly the same! except for me... because I gained like 50lbs since 2002, tsk tsk tsk).
15 years of friendship... and counting! I am blessed.
Speaking of cool climates, I had a chance to visit another city in the Philippines with a cool climate: Tagaytay. It's around a 2-hour drive south from Manila. We attended a birthday party last Saturday for one of my husband's nieces who just turned 9 years old. We arrived there at 3:30 in the afternoon and when I got out of the car, you know what greeted me? A cool breeze. Like really cool. So while we in Manila would be sweltering around that time (did you know Manila reached 35 degrees Celsius yesterday? 95 Farenheit), people in Tagaytay are comfortably cool.

Since we knew it was cooler in Tagaytay, Andrea finally got to wear her velvet dress. This was a gift from my husband's Aunt and Uncle who live in this area. Andrea gets a little hot in this dress when she wears it in Manila but here...

... she seemed comfortable in it.

Notice the volcano in the lake behind us? That's Taal Volcano. I've read somewhere that it's the world's smallest volcano, but I'm not sure if that's accurate.
Photo taken using my phone's camera.
This view is visible from most parts of Tagaytay. You don't even have to go to a particular place to see it. You can be driving on a road and see this. Ok here's one funny (and somehow embarrassing for me to admit) thing. That small volcano-looking small mountain is NOT the Taal Volcano.
I mean this one... this is NOT the live volcano.
All my life, when I see pictures in  text books of Taal Volcano, this is what we see. A few years ago however, my husband and I with some friends took a boat to see the Taal Volcano and the crater lake and imagine my surprise when we went past this one. The boat man told me that this volcano has been dead for a long time. The real one, the one with the crater lake that people go to, is actually here:
See that island? The active volcano is somewhere in the middle of that island. And when I say active, I  mean active... I think I heard on a the news a few months back that there was some activity and a warning was issued on the residents of that island. It has not erupted yet though, good thing.  And to think that a few years back, a business man from Korea was fighting for a permit to build a spa resort right beside the crater lake. Crazy. You can see the volcano from the air, but apparently, not so much if you're on land. But if you're talking photos... then I must admit, the dead volcano (even if it is NOT the Taal Volcano, there is no lake in the middle of that one, just dry land) looks more dramatic.

Before I end this post, let me share one last thing:
Totally NOT related to any of the topics discussed above but I just want to share. We built Andrea a pillow fort for the first time last night. Three pillows formed the wall, and then daddy and I held a blanket over her head (that's why I was in the photo) for the roof. Can you tell she loved it? (Oh and please ignore our messy hair... we were in bed and in our pajamas getting ready for bed at this time).

What's new this week?

I have 41 followers??? Wow! When I logged off last Friday, I only had 37, I think. Anyway, welcome new friends!

I saw a couple of blogs that hosted their giveaways when they reached 40 followers, not really an impressive feat in blogland I know, but I started with only 2 followers (and both of them are my friends, haha!) last October... so 40 is amazing to me. I've actually been planning to host one but I still have to figure out the logistics. I'm not sure if you gals noticed but I'm not in the US (I might be visiting again in October *wishing wishing* but that's not yet certain), but around 70% of my readers are. And some are visiting from other countries too. When I host my giveaway, I want it to be open to all my readers, wherever in the world you might be. So first, I have to find out how much it would cost to ship from here so I can figure out how many prizes I can afford to give away. Until then, I hope you continue to find things to inspire you in my blog.

Anyway, I finally got around to doing a little decorating last weekend! I was planning to post something today but I was sick in bed all of Sunday so I didn't finish editing all the photos. For now, I leave you with this teaser:
What's new this week?
Details and tutorials coming this week!

Thank you!

I started this blog as a personal blog in 2008. I don't post regularly, and when I do, it's usually about anything under the sun. Then late last year, I discovered something that inspired me to start blogging about crafts:

I discovered Disney's blog, Ruffles and Stuff. And from her blog, I found MADE, and Tea Rose Home, and a lot of other amazing blogs. They inspired me so much that 2 weeks after I found their blogs, I bought my own sewing machine... even though I didn't know how to sew!

When I first started posting my projects, it never occurred to me that I would someday be featured on other blogs. So imagine my surprise when I logged in one morning and saw this:
I almost fell off my chair. Haha! My first feature! And then I got featured on other blogs! On an otherwise stressful working day, seeing comments from other bloggers saying my project was featured suddenly makes it a great day! (like today, when I saw that Mandy from Sugar Bee featured me) Seriously. It feels good to know that someone out there appreciated something I made.

And then this one other thing... last January, I decided to add my blog to Top Blogs. They rank blogs by bloggers in the Philippines weekly based on weekly visits. I added my blog under the Arts and Crafts category and I usually rank around 25th by the end of the week before they refresh the stats. To be ranked 25th out of around 150 blogs logged under that category is great for me already. Yesterday, before I left, I was ranked 13th... and then this morning:

Ranked 10th out of around 150 in my category. This is probably the highest ranking I can get but this is definitely way higher than I thought I would ever get!

So to everyone who visits my blog, and to everyone who keeps sharing their wonderful and creative ideas online..

I hope to share more projects with you all! :)

Spotted: Hello Kitty Car

I saw this car at a gas station on my way to work this morning:

 Hello Kitty fan :)

I tried to do an image search on Google for 'Hello Kitty Cars' and was surprised that there are a lot. When I get around to learning how to drive (and not being so dependent on my husband to drive me when I want to go somewhere) and get my own car... I think I want an interior like this.

And when my husband sees this post, he will tell me again that this is why I should never be allowed to own a car, haha!

Looking back

Last January, I reviewed my previous year's "to-do" list. So this year, let's look at what I set out to do last year to see how I did:

  1. Get Andrea walking and talking by the time she reaches 1-year old. FAIL. When I was making last year's list, by talking, I was thinking more of phrases. But I guess that was too much wishful thinking. She can talk like... like say "Daddy", "Mama", "Ate", "Dora", "Pucca", and a few others. This December, she learned how to say "Map" and "Backpack" (though she says 'ba-pa') and yes I know she watches too much "Dora the Explorer". Anyway I say 'FAIL' because she can't walk yet... not by herself at least. She's still a little wobbly and needs to hold on to someone's hand when she walks.
  2. Visit my dad at least twice this year. SUCCESS! I visited 3x :)
  3. Bring Helaena with me to Bataan at least once. Big big success! I consider this my second biggest achievement for last year (next to surviving Andrea's first year of course!).
  4. Buy a new car. Whee!!! This one's a success too!! I didn't really think we will be able to do this last year given all our expenses for Andrea but I guess God works in mysterious ways and he answered my prayers... our old car broke down. Like really broke down... stalled on my husband on his way home one night, needed to be towed back to our house in the middle of the night and cost us a lot to get fixed... AGAIN! I guess it was the last straw for my husband as well because after we got it fixed, he finally agreed to see it and get a new one.
  5. Lose the weight I gained during pregnancy. Big FAIL :( I still need to lose another 10 lbs.
  6. Get rid of around 50% of junk around the house. I THINK I succeeded. I was able to get the old VCR (totally old school right???) out of the room and I think my husband got rid of it. The old printer was supposed to be given away, I took it out of storage but I have a nagging suspicion my husband has it hidden around the house somewhere X( The hard drives are out... the old PC's are out. The old books are still there but I was able to get rid of some other old stuff so ok, I consider this one a success.
  7. Get a flu vaccine. FAIL. I never got around to it. And I got the flu for the first time since 2008. Aargggh. This is so totally going to be in my to-do list for 2011.
  8. Get the vaccine against cervical cancer. FAIL. With Andrea's vaccines, her equipment (walker, high chair, car seat stage 1, etc, etc) and buying a new car, I decided to put this off for this year or when I'm brave enough to get the shots (because I heard they hurt!). I'll think about it.
  9. Participate in at least one volunteer activity/support a charitable activity. DONE. I prefer not to elaborate on this.
5 out of 9... I'm a little sad. That's like only a little over 50%. Numbers 2, 3 and 4 mean a lot to me though, so I guess it's all good. I'm working on my list for 2011. Will be sharing it soon.

Weekends are precious

Things I am looking forward to doing this weekend:
  • Watch "Eclipse"
  • Watch "Toy Story 3"
  • Watch "Shrek The Final Chapter" --> pushing it too far I guess, I don't think this movie is still showing but I really do want to watch this :( I've missed so many movies.
  • Visit the Forever 21 store that just opened at Megamall.
  • Not be sick.
I have been sick the past 2 weekends. Nope, not the past 2 weeks... for some reason, it just starts during the weekends X(.

Two weeks ago, I a sore throat started Saturday afternoon which turned unbearable in the evening. Sunday morning greeted me with a splitting headache that won't go away even with the pills and tablets I was popping every hour. I started taking antibiotics Monday and started feeling better during the week. Came Friday and I thought I was fine.

Until I woke up Saturday with a slight cough... which got worse during the day and by evening, I can literally feel the cough and cold taking hold of my body. I was bed ridden Sunday. Monday came and though I was feeling a little off, I decided to go to work anyway. Day by day, and I can feel myself getting better. I still have a slight cough and cold today but nothing that will keep me bed ridden tomorrow (I hope!).

So there, I haven't had a chance to do anything much the past 2 weekends except be sick. I hope I can finally take a break this weekend.

...And in with the new

... year!

I'm 12 days late for New Year's resolutions. Anyway, I don't like resolutions so I'll stick with plans.

1. Get Andrea walking and talking by the time she reaches 1-year old.

2. Visit my dad at least twice this year. I'm not the best daughter but I'm not a bad one either. I wasn't able to visit my dad even once last year since I couldn't travel but I hope to do better this year.

3. Bring Helaena with me to Bataan at least once. I still don't know how I'll manage this since my mom will probably fight me tooth and nail against it. But by hook or by crook I will try my best to get Helaena to meet her relatives in Bataan.

4. Buy a new car. I still don't know how I'll manage to convince my husband short of wrecking our old one but I really believe that we NEED a new car.

5. Lose the weight I gained during pregnancy. I am not shooting for the moon here. I know my limits.

6. Get rid of around 50% of junk around the house. My husband likes keeping things. I don't know what he has against the trash can but he doesn't like throwing out stuff... even old, broken ones. Top on my list of things to get rid of: old broken VCR, old corrupted external hard drive, old books.

7. Get a flu vaccine. I was not able to get one last year so I will definitely get one this year.

8. Get the vaccine against cervical cancer. I am a bit undecided on this one since 1) I seem to have developed a trauma on needles due my numerous needle encounters when I was pregnant; 2) it's expensive, and I already have Andrea's vaccines to think of; 3) one of my friends told me it hurts!

9. Participate in at least one volunteer activity/support a charitable activity. I think this is something we all have to do every year so I'll put this in again.

I had 9 plans last year and I have 9 again this year. Bring it on, 2010!

The year 2009

This is the first time since the year started that I find myself with a little extra time to reflect on my 2009. Life really is full of surprises! My year turned out very differently from how I planned it.

At the beginning 2009, I documented my plans for the year (see Begin with the end in mind, January 7, 2009). Let's see how well I did.

2009 Plans:

1. Consume only 1 plastic cup from the pantry per week.
(Just the ones from our office pantry and not including the plastic cups used to serve drinks at fast food joints). I think I actually did better than this. Since I started using my own mug... I think I stopped using plastic and styrofoam cups from the pantry as early as February last year.

2. Start thinking about carbon footprints.
As I said... just START ;) Since we didn't get to go anywhere all year (no flights)... and I was even stuck at home for a month (no cab rides, car rides), AND I started bringing my own re-usable cloth shopping bag late last year when I go to the grocery, I think our carbon footprint was significantly reduced.

3. Have shelves installed and cabinets repaired downstairs.
Yey!!! This is done :) (See Home Improvement - Part I regarding the book shelf). My husband installed new shelves for our books and the cabinet doors in our kitchen downstairs have been replaced (thanks to my in-laws, they were the ones who had the new ones made :D).

4. Visit 2 Asian countries.
Sadly, this was out of the question last year and for the next few years I think until Andrea is old enough to actually enjoy an out of the country vacation.

5. Get Flu vaccine.
I wasn't able to get one last year either since my OB Gyne asked me to wait until after I gave birth. But I've never been so healthy in my entire life as I was last year. Even without the flu vaccine, I didn't get the flu. I took vitamins everyday, milk 2x a day, no drinking, no exposure to 2nd hand smoke, plenty of rest, etc etc.

6. Visit at least one Philippine destination that we've never been to before.
Hmmm... I didn't get to do much travelling last year due to a complicated pregnancy. My husband and I did get to go to Clark to witness the Hot Air Balloon festival though. It was the first time we've been able to see it (though we've been to Clark before). I think that can count... though it wasn't exactly what I had in mind.

7. Limit purchases for the year to 5 pairs of shoes and 2 bags.
Stupid plan for any other year but I was able to keep to this last year. My feet were so swollen for most part of last year that I lost all desire for shoes and just bought one comfortable pair which I wore out from overuse and discarded immediately after I gave birth.

8. Make sure that all books and magazines in the house are in bookshelves.
I think they are... except for the ones my husband read and never returned to their proper places X(

9. Participate in at least one volunteer activity/Support a charitable activity.
Wow... I forgot this was even part of my plan. I think I only had Earth Hour in mind when I wrote this but I didn't get to volunteer for that since I was already pregnant then. But I was able to give my support to a couple of organizations during their Typhoon Ondoy relief operations.

That was it. But I had additional accomplishments:

1. My blog did 2x as well as it did last year. As of last year, I was only targeting 1000 visits before the year ends. I was able to meet that. Then this year, I had more than 2000 visits. So Thank you!

2. And very important: I had Andrea :)

Now I have to start thinking about 2010.

Knowing when to let go

Ok this has nothing to do with my previous post about marriage *wink*.

Can you name 3 things you had to let go of in the past that was most difficult for you? (Let's stick with material things ok, it's a given that people are always hard to let go).

Here's mine:

1. Old letters
- I was introduced to the concept of long term correspondence at an early age. My yaya since I was a baby decided she didn't want to move to the province with us and left us when I was 6 years old. I cried and screamed when I learned about it and cried, screamed and clawed at everyone who tried to restrain me the day she left (nothing really changed over the years huh?). I made her promise to write me and well... she did :) And then my childhood friend and her family migrated to the US when I was about 7 years old and we promised to write to each other. I have been exchanging handwritten letters with both of them until I was in high school.

And then we moved back to the city when I was in college after my parents separated and I had limited space. I needed to let go of some stuff and well... back then, my backpack containing the old letters were my mom's prime candidate for disposal. I didn't want to, but I can see my mom's point about space. I wanted to sort through them, to keep at least some, but there were too many and I was struggling with school. So I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and put the entire lot in the trash.

Did I regret it? Of course I did. I still do whenever I think about it. With the rising popularity of emails, almost no one bothers to write real letters anymore. And it would have been interesting to go back and see what I was thinking back when I was 6 or 7 years old.

2. Gifts from friends - especially those I received since I started going to school. I'm not sure how it is with boys, but between girls and their girlfriends, a lot of small items are exchanged through the years between kindergarten and high school: stuffed animals, ceramic display figures, and a lot of odds and ends in candy pink or purple. Would you believe I kept most (if not all) of them? I can't get rid of something especially if I can remember when it was given to me and by whom. And then I started working and small tokens from co-workers every holiday added to my growing pile. After I got married and moved in with my husband, I decided to sort through everything and let go of most of them. I was able to reduce the pile to around half? But some I just couldn't let go of, not yet.

3. Books - ok this is what triggered this line of thought in the first place. I was sitting on the stairs this morning while putting on shoes and my eyes wandered to our very full bookshelf. And in my mind's eye flashed a picture of our very full bookshelf and the very full closet in our guest room upstairs. At this point in our lives, I think my husband and I will still be buying more books in the future. So it's either get a bigger house (bwahahaha!!) or downsize our collection. I dread the day when I have to tell my husband we have to sort through the books again. We nearly got into a fight the last time we did it. He doesn't want to get rid of anything. I don't either but I know we needed to do it.

I was an 80's kid and I discovered Francine Pascal's Sweet Valley books when I was in the 1st grade. I've been collecting them since until I reached high school. When we moved back to Manila, I parked my books in a bookshelf in the library at my grandparent's house where we lived for a couple of years. When we moved to our new house, I was assigned a space in the small bookshelf in the living room. It was not enough so again, my mom urged me to sort through my books and get rid of those I haven't read in the past 5 years. That's pretty much all my childhood fairy tale books and the Sweet Valley collection. I held out for as long as I could, enduring barrage after barrage of nagging to get rid of them. I don't know why I even cared. It was true that I haven't read them in years, nor was I planning to read them again. I guess what people say is true, that books are like friends and it's hard to let them go. But I did eventually.

-o-

Nowadays, I don't get attached to material things that much anymore. I don't think twice about replacing something that needs replacing and throwing out stuff I don't use. I guess the longer you hold on to something, the harder it is to let go. One tip I can offer when you have to throw something away, is to just close your eyes and do it. Clean break. And don't think about it much. If it's something you really haven't used or seen or thought about in 3 years or more, then it's not really necessary to keep it (unless you have a big house with lots of storage, in which case, hoard, hoard away!).

Who would have thought?

Consider me weird but I actually miss the days when I did housework. (OMG! the world IS ending!!!)

It all started last Saturday, when I woke up and found my house clean, the trash taken out, and breakfast ready. Though I was expecting it since we got our housekeeper, it felt weird. Because that was my Saturday routine: wake up, take out the trash, clean the house, prepare breakfast, wash dishes, prepare lunch, wash dishes, do laundry. Mundane though it was, it filled my Saturdays. Last Saturday found me at 9AM with nothing to do.

I waited for MG to wake up (which was around 11AM). We then had lunch (that our housekeeper prepared) and settled in the living room to watch TV (while our housekeeper did the lunch dishes before she left for her weekend off)... all afternoon! I was bored out of my head. I would have appreciated the help about a year ago when I was managing a small business and killing myself maintaining a household and a regular job at the same time. But now, when I can hardly go out, I realize I'm beginning to miss the mundane.

Monday Morning Tidbits

My mind was wandering on my way to work this morning

1. New Year's resolution, broken during the first week: I used 3 plastic cups from the pantry last week... Aaargh! I'm going to have to try harder this week. Or better yet, I think I need to bring my own mug

2. Heard on the radio this morning:

Mr. De la Paz: I think we are given one year to file an appeal.
Korina: You are one year to appeal...

(I think she meant, "You have one year to appeal...")

3. Sa wakas! They finally re-opened the first U-Turn sa C5. The sign says it's open from 9AM - 4PM only.

4. I was being attacked my Monday sickness and I was fighting the urge to tell the cab driver to turn back. I swore to myself 2 years ago that I will refrain from not going to work on Mondays, even when I'm really sick, because it gives a bad impression. So here I am.

Have a great week!
