The Guy at the Elevator

No, this is not going to be one of those mushy stories of a random encounter that changes your life forever.

This is a story of the moral degradation that we continue to see and experience around us.

Different workplaces, different cultures. When I started 2 years ago at my new workplace, I did not immediately notice the different dress code, the more casual way people address each other (no ma'am's and sir's here), the different way they hold meetings, and the many other things that are different. What I first clearly noticed and felt, was that people don't hold the door open for other people. Where I used to work, when you open the door and see that someone is approaching and about to enter also, you wait and hold the door open for them and smile, and the person says "thank you". Man, woman, boss, staff... it didn't matter. It was how things were. Very trivial and something you might hardly notice until you start living without that common courtesy.

Here, people flash their ID's, open the door, and release. It doesn't matter if you are closely following at their heels. You just have to be alert to keep the door from slamming into you. There have been few exceptions, mostly if the person ahead of you is someone you know, and a few strangers. You get used to this after a while. The only people here to consistently greet you and hold the door open for you are the security guards (who are extremely courteous and polite in this place).

Well, people may not hold the door open for you, but at least they hold the elevator doors open. There are only 3 main elevators that serve the general population of 6th-30th floor offices. Hence, it has been the general courtesy to hold the doors open until the elevator is either full or you are sure that no one else is trying to get in. Which brings me back to the guy at the elevator.

I took the elevator after lunch earlier. As people were getting in, I saw a guy inside standing a bit to the back but leaning forward punching the elevator buttons frantically. I initially thought he was holding the elevator doors open for the others until I got in and took the space slightly in front of him. He was forced to release the elevator button and that was when I saw that he had been punching the "Close" button all along! He was trying to close the elevator doors as people were trying to get in! I glared back at him and he was trying hard not to look at me and stared at the ceiling. Stupid guy really. Didn't he realize that the elevator doors have sensors and won't close as long as there is something blocking it? I kept looking back and glaring at him the entire time it took the elevator to reach the 9th floor where he got off. The entire time, he was never brave enough to meet my gaze. If he had, I was planning to ask him if the elevator belongs to him.

What that guy did was completely selfish. He probably wanted to get back to his office immediately. But the elevator does not exist for his personal use, other people needed to use it. Maybe he was busy? Probably. But can you really be busy enough that you can't take a few seconds to practice common courtesy?

Urban Dictionary: Janelle

I got this link from one of my contacts in Facebook. It's another one of those notes where you are supposed to tag people but since I'm running out of people to tag, I decided to just explore the site.

On the note circulating around Facebook, the first item is to look up your name. So I looked up "Janelle" and this is what I got:
Janelle

The most Beautiful Australian name that ever existed, usually given to beautiful Australian females. common nicknames include Nelly Nel Jan.

Wow... I love my name! :D

Fraud!

I received a disturbing message from my cousin earlier on Friendster. She said that someone is pretending to be her, using her pictures and adding her friends and relatives, and that I should delete that account from my list. I checked my friends list and there are 2 accounts in her name, with similar profile photos (my cousin wearing a purple gown... only my cousin is using a close-up pic, and the fraud is using a pic with her sitting).

Not sure which one is real, I sent my cousin a message on her phone to ask her about it and she confirmed that she was the one who sent me the message on Friendster. I deleted the fraudulent account and asked her about her Multiply account. She said she doesn't have one.

isangmilya.multiply.com is a fraud.

I already deleted that account from my contacts list as well.

I don't know anyone who is sick enough to pretend to be someone else. It worries me since I restricted access to my online accounts to my friends only and I only add people I really know. By adding those fraudulent accounts, I gave a complete stranger access to the stuff I uploaded online.

I guess this is another reminder to everyone to be careful about what we post online. Because that fraud probably got my cousin's details and photos somewhere on the internet and he/she was able to get enough to fool my cousin's closest relatives (her brothers also added that fraudulent account) and friends into believing that was her.

Keeping my Silence

I keep my silence, even when my conscience (yes, my beautiful conscience) dictates otherwise. Because this is not my business, not my fight... Not yet. Even though it is my friends' (and I always fight for my friends) and I know that the consequences will soon reach me. It is inevitable. But I will wait for that time, my time. Because I believe that everyone should have the chance to fight their own battles. And that everyone should be given the chance to realize they made a mistake and try again.

So I will wait. And hope you get it right before the time comes when your path crosses mine.

For now, I will simmer at the injustice in silence.

Save Water...

...DRINK ME!

I ordered Pepsi Max at a restaurant last night and this was written on one side of the can. I get the joke. I just hope people are not dumb enough to believe it :) It actually takes more water to produce that can than the 1 glass it would take to quench your thirst.

14th Philippine International Hot Air Balloon Fiesta

I went to the Hot Air Balloon Fiesta at Clark, Angeles with my family last Sunday. We left Manila at 5:00 AM and were at Clark by 6:30. We saw the balloons as they were getting inflated while we were inside the car looking for a parking space. But after that, we had to get in the long line for additional tickets so while my mom stood in line for us, I went with MG and Lester to the nearby Ministop to get breakfast. MG was able to take these photos of the hot air balloons in flight.

Beautiful aren't they? Oh, is that a floating mug???
I saw a Coke balloon from a distance but I didn't see it in the air so I'm not sure if it was just a giant balloon (I didn't see it in the grounds though) or a hot air balloon. Too bad we didn't get a photo.

After the hot air balloons disappeared in the horizon, the airshow started. It was my first time to see an airshow live.

A plane flying upside down. It flew like this for a few seconds.

Can you see the pilot? This was taken with MG's telephoto lens. In the original hi-res photo, you can zoom in and actually see the pilot's profile. Amazing! It's good to know that those expensive lenses actually do have a purpose. I had to resize the photos for faster uploading though.

Two planes: the plane on the left is flying upside down.
Another one of those planes... I forgot what these are called.

Scott MacIntyre is in the Top 36!

Late post, I know. Even worse, I actually missed that episode! X( And now I don't even remember what was so important at the mall that I had to miss it. Tsk tsk..

I was able to find a video of his interview with the judges though.

I hope he makes it to the Top 12 as well... and the Top 4!

AI: Hollywood Week, Round 3

It was still Hollywood Week and the contestants got to sing solo with back-up musicians/singers or using their own instruments. I'm a little confused with the results though.

1. Michael Castro got eliminated. I can't really say if he deserves to be or not. Why? Because we never saw any of his performances for Hollywood Week. It was really a letdown for me because I was really curious about him. I was a Jason Castro fan last season.

2. Tatiana Del Toro is really annoying. I mean, I already noticed last week but she was particularly annoying last night. Her wide-eyed, scared-to-death, crying-in-the-corner look was so over-the-top. Drama queen. Wasn't she initially assigned to the room that got eliminated? She should have been. But I read on another blog that she made it to the Top 36. What????

3. So far, my favorites are Scott McIntyre (of course!), Danny Gokey, and his bestfriend Jamar. I already saw Scott and Danny on the list of the Top 36 but what happened to Jamar?

Finally! Scott MacIntyre

I have yet to see the episode tonight but thanks to other blogs, I already watched the video clip of Scott MacIntyre's performance. Finally, airtime!

Puerto Galera - How to Get There

Dear friends,

I know summer is approaching when I start receiving text messages asking me how to go to White Beach, Puerto Galera. Every year, I never fail to receive at least one inquiry. And sure enough, I received the first inquiry for this year this morning!

I gave most of you this spiel before. I decided to just write it down to save myself the P1.00 per text message that I spend replying to all your inquiries. I think my total text spiel is about 5 messages long right? Now, the next person who asks is getting a URL, and I save P5.00 (sorry Smart).

By the way, let me first clarify that my last trip to White Beach, Puerto Galera was in May of 2005 so I'm not sure about rates anymore. A friend of mine who went last year told me they haven't changed much.

How to go to Puerto Galera from anywhere in Metro Manila and surrounding areas:

Step 1: Take a cab and tell the cab driver to take you the JAC Liner station in Kamias.
I know there are other bus lines and stations but this is the only one I know (so JAC Liner, thank me for the free promotion.)

Step 2. Take the bus going to Batangas Pier.
Bus rates from Kamias should be around P200 I think, I am not sure) one way. Travel time is between 3-4 hours if you start out early (and by early, I mean before the sun rises over Metro Manila).

Step 3. When you get to the Pier, look for the ticket counter for M/B Brian or M/B Natividad.
These 2 will take you directly to White Beach. I STRONGLY suggest you take only either one of these 2. They have the most boats going to and from White Beach. I think during peak season, either one will have a boat leaving the pier every 30 minutes. I think fare is around P300 one way. I really don't remember.

When you get to the pier, there will be other people who will offer to take you on different boats to White Beach. What most of them really mean is... you will get to White Beach eventually. Other boats dock somewhere "near" White Beach where they tell you you can take a "shuttle" to White Beach. And when they say "shuttle", they will not always mean airconditioned vans... it can mean any vehicle that will not offer you protection as you traverse the dustiest roads imaginable (I exaggerate, but trust me, the experience was not pleasant). There are other boats that will really take you to White Beach directly, and at a cheaper price. I don't know. What I do know is I have several friends who got waylaid because they took those boats. One of my friends took a boat that they overloaded probably hoping they won't be inspected but they were so they had to let other passengers off... passengers who paid because they wanted to leave at that time and will now have to wait for the return trip of that same boat (4 hours wait?) fron White Beach.

So if you're my friend, I STRONGLY suggest you just go with M/B Brian or M/B Natividad. If we're not friends, you can be as adventurous in your choices as you want, I don't care :)

Step 4. Make sure you are near the loading dock a few minutes before your scheduled departure so you are one of the first in line to board the boat.
You can choose seats with the least probability of getting wet. I'm joking... sit anywhere you want, it doesn't matter, you will probably get wet wherever you sit anyway. But if you are near the front of the line, you and your friends can choose seats where you will all be together. You can start taking pictures on the boat. Pang-Friendster/Multiply/Facebook din yun.

Step 5. When you get to White Beach and you don't have room reservations, you will have someone offering to get you a room the moment your feet touch sand.
So don't worry. Just tell your guide you want a room on the beach front. You can check out as many resorts as you want along White Beach until you find one that suits you. When your guide tells you there are no vacant rooms along the beach front, he is just probably affiliated with another resort farther back :) You can choose to eithrt ditch your guide and walk along White beach and inquire along the many establishments lining the beach front, or whine and wheedle and insist to your guide that you really, really, really want a room along the beach front and you might get lucky. Either way worked for me :)

Step 6. But before you go looking for a room, make sure you look for the M/B Brian or M/B Natividad booth along the shore to buy your return ticket first. As of 2005, you can't buy return tickets from their ticket booth in Batangas Pier. Not sure if they do now. But if they don't, make sure you buy your return tickets immediately. Especially if it's a weekend.

And there you go. You are in Puerto Galera.

Oh before I end this post, I have one more tip: Start your trip early. I am usually the sadistic b1t*ch in the group who suggests that everyone be at the bus station by 3:30AM. Yes, 3:30 AM. I have been to Puerto Galera several times in the past and I have learned to time my arrival on the beach perfectly ;)

My itinerary usually goes like this:
3:30 - 4:00 AM Bus station
4:00 - 7:00 AM Trip to Batangas Pier
7:00 AM Arrival in Batangas Pier but by this time, the earliest available ticket for boats is around 8:30 already. If you arrived much later, then you get a ticket for a later trip.
7:00 - 8:30 AM Wait for boat in Batangas Pier
8:30 - 10:30 AM boat ride to White Beach
10:30 - 11:00 AM look for accomodations. When you find one, you can't check in until afternoon yet so you look for somewhere to eat first.
11:00 - 1:00 PM lunch
1:00 PM walk back to your resort and check in
2:00 OM take a nap, because some b1t*ch made me get up at 3:30 AM! Oh wait... that was me :)

Enjoy your trip!

xoxo Janelle

Home Improvement Project - Part 3

My couch has arrived!!!

It actually arrived around 4PM last Sunday but I was too lazy to take photos.

Looking at the photos, my living room looks a tad... empty... don't you think? But when I'm actually there, it feels cramped. Oh well, I think I need a set of drawers to the left side of the sofa, a new armchair/lazy boy, and new curtains. The walls are still empty. We plan to hang the frames after we complete the furniture set-up (March! I swear to me it will be complete by March!)

BEFORE: old purple couch

AFTER: new yellow couch
my couch with the new pillows

Closer look at the pillows. I so totally knew the yellow-blue-yellow green color scheme would work!! I should get that yellow green armchair I want. But who said the work was done? :(

Action Items:
- get new entertainment center
- get set of drawers for the corner
- get a new armchair/lazy boy
- get a small corner table
- hang frames on the wall
- get another bookshelf.

More to come!

The Black Hole that was Smart, hehe

I realized about a month ago that there are no photos from when I was in Smart uploaded to my Multiply account. Though I created this account after I left Smart, I already found the time to upload photos from SVI (the company I worked for before I came to Smart) and photos with my MTM classmates (classes I tool before I came to Smart), and almost all photos I have after I left Smart.

It's as if the time I spent in Smart did not exist... the black hole of my existence

A little exaggeration there. There are other photos in between that I never took the time to upload. I was just too lazy to go through our old photos to see which ones I should be uploading. But the recent scare with losing some of our photos made me take the time to sort photos and upload a few selected ones here. After all, I did pay for this account to serve as my back up. So in a few minutes, I will be uploading photos from the time I was with Smart. Then next week, I can upload other old photos as well.

Scott MacIntyre is still in the game!

I really hate it that he is not being given airtime. His group performance was not aired in last night's episode. He was only given a very brief shot... like 2 seconds? Along with other people who made it through group round. But anyway, he's still in the competition! And I still have reason to watch American Idol! :)

I'm not really an American Idol fan. Last season was the first time I watched... and I watched because I was rooting for Jason Castro. I stopped watching religiously after Jason was voted off.

Anyway, last night's episode (February 5) was the group round. My favorites among the performances aired were the first group's performance, and the performance of the group that went a capella. I was hoping Scott's group's performance would be aired but... oh well.

Watching that episode was stressful. All that drama! It really is difficult working with other people. You have to consider that you have different strengths and ways of doing things. What's important is that everyone understands the objective and that you find a way to accomplish that objective given your team's unique set of strengths and weaknesses. Working with a team, you can not insist on doing things just your way. And I think that's why some of the participants struggled.

So far there are still 75 contestants left. And they all know that only 36 (I think?) will make it through Hollywood week.

Oh, again, I tried searching for videos of Scott MacIntyre on YouTube with disappointing results. There were, however, a lot of videos of his brother Todd singing, with Scott on the piano. Todd is good too. Maybe we will see him next season. Here is one of those videos.

Home Improvement Project - Part 2

I'm getting my new couch this weekend and I'm excited :) The couch is the dominant piece of furniture in our small living room and as such, sets the general color motif of the entire area (including the dining area). Our old couch is purple so everything in the living area is in either pink or with a shade of violet. When we had our living room repainted, I insisted on having yellow trim. My new couch will also be yellow. I am aiming for a yellow and blue motif for the living and dining areas. I wanted a yellow, blue and yellow green motif, but MG is so opposed to the yellow green X(

In preparation for the arrival of the "queen" of our living room, I started buying small items that will reinforce the yellow-and-blue color scheme. I replaced the table cloth in the dining room with one in deep blue and had the dining chairs reupholstered in a close-matching color (MG also did the reupholstering, another one of his DIY projects... photos to follow). Then I bought a couple of vases in yellow and blue.

This corner table is still a work in progress. I still have to work on the flower arrangement. I was actually aiming for a different arrangement but I couldn't get the flowers to bend the way I want so this is what I ended up with. I initially wanted to hang a painting in this area but those darned light switches are in the way! :(

This is my other corner table, but the entire thing has to go because I'm replacing the coffee table set in this area with either an oversized armchair or a lazy boy. It's too bad, I kind of like the way this table turned out. The pink curtains will also be replaced.

I'll be posting photos of my living room with the new couch next week :)

Scott MacIntyre made it through Round 1 of Hollywood week!

I saw this guy's audition, heard his story, and admire him for overcoming the hurdle that life handed him and with his faith intact.

Last night, I watched as AI season 8 contestants sang their hearts out in round 1 of Hollywood week. Scott's performance wasn't aired but it was mentioned that he made it through. Yey!!!

I hope he makes it through Hollywood week at least.

I've been trying to find videos of his audition but couldn't find any (I'm an amateur user of YouTube). I found this video though.

Lost Photos

Yesterday, as I was selecting photos that I want to print, I discovered that we lost all the photos we had from November 2007 to February 2008. I still don't know what happened to them.

I remember that before we got our external hard drive, I was backing up all photos in CD's. From what I remember, we had 21 CD's: Volume 1-20 already had printed covers (I print covers which lists all the files in that CD so I'll know what's in them) and the last one. Volume 21. had no cover and no marking but it was inserted in the sleeve right next to the 20th CD. When we got our external hard drive, I know I migrated all the files in our laptop and in those CD's.

Sample CD cover :) (this is the CD cover of Volume 20 that went missing)

I had a lot of friends who got married near the end of 2007 and I was looking for those photos yesterday when I discovered the missing photos. When I got home, I checked the back-up CD's and discovered that both Volume 20 and 21 were missing! I found an unmarked loose CD just inserted between 2 sleeves and when I tried to check it's contents, I discovered that the CD was already corrupted (I don't know why! There was no scratch on it). Volume 21 is still missing.

I checked the laptop and as expected, I already deleted all photos earlier than June 2008 from the hard drive. I uploaded some of those photos in our Multiply account but those are no longer high resolution copies. I can live with losing most of those photos but I wish my brother has a copies of our photos from New Year 2008 in his PC :(

Home Improvement Project - Part I

MG and I have a lot of books scattered around the house. We have this one bookshelf downstairs which also doubles as the house eyesore and mini-tambakan of everything little thing we don't know where else to put.

If you have been to my house, you can not have missed this metal monster.

I have been trying to redecorate the house for the longest time but MG has been opposing me for reasons I will never understand. What could you possibly have against a nice house??? So I've been trying to do it little by little, corner by corner, so he won't notice so much. We already had the downstairs area re-painted, courtesy of MG's parents . I already succeeded in getting a kitchen cabinet for the dining area corner (getting rid of the green plastic shelf that stood there for the longest time). I also succeeded in getting a new center table to replace the big wooden one that takes up a lot of our small living room space.

Getting a new bookshelf was not that easy since there were so many things we had to consider.

1. We both have to like it (BIG problem already since we have different tastes);
2. It must be able to accommodate as many books in diff
erent sizes as possible;
3. It must fit in a space where it won't obstruct the delivery of my new sofa this weekend (so definitely not in the hallway leading to the living room where our metal monster used to be);

4. The tone of the finish must match, or be close, to the tone of the current furniture we have.

These and other things. Number 1 already was a big enough obstacle. Everything I chose MG didn't like and what he liked I don't like. So we decided to make our own.

Ta-daaaaahh!!

The boards were already pre-cut and laminated so it was a matter of installing the support on the walls. I believe MG had fun putting the whole thing up. He loves those DIY thingeys. I arranged the books according to the probability of me reading them again. I like how the books look uneven. But MG doesn't (grrrr!). But unless he plans to re-arrange the entire thing, it's staying as it is.

MG's toys made their home in spaces between books.

This does not in any way mean we are done with our bookshelf issues. We still have a cabinet-full of books that need to be put in proper shelves. We just have to decide where (in our small house) to put them.

Random 25

I've been tagged by Hazel (in Facebook).

Rules: Once you've been tagged, you are supposed to write a note with 25 random things, facts, habits or goals about yourself. At the end, choose 25 people to be tagged, including the person who tagged you.

To do this, go to "notes" under tabs on your profile page, paste these instructions in the body of the note, type your 25 random things, tag 25 people (in the right hand corner) then click publish.

1. The first items in my computer's taskbar must always be in this order from left to right: Outlook, Work document folder, My Documents folder, Yahoo Messenger, Yahoo Mail. I can not work if they are not in that order.

2. All items in my desk have to be arranged in straight lines before I can start working but the mess in my bedside table and dresser at home never bother me.

3. I can not sleep without a fuzzy blanket.

4. I can not start working until I have read every unread email in my mail box. Seeing unread email bug the hell out of me.

5. I drink Coke Light every day (but trying to break the habit).

6. I still think about my lolo every now and then.

7. I have been brainwashed into environmentalism.

8. I like watching shows on the Disney channel.

9. I can't go out without a lip balm in my bag.

10. Lip balm and lotion are scattered around my house. They must always be within my reach.

11. I have several pads of Post-It in my desk in different shapes and colors. I rarely use them.

12. I have a difficult time remembering names and faces.

13. I remember birthdays.

14. I think my house is messy and I believe the only way to clean up is to throw stuff away but MG won't let me.

15. I want to paint our bedroom red but MG won't let me either.

16. I want to buy a yellow green armchair but again... MG won't let me! Grrrr... (hehe)

17. I keep gift tags. I never throw them away.

18. My hobbies are all temporary. I can never stay interested in something for more than a year.

19. All the pets I had when I was younger died within 3 months (except for my first dog that I got when I was 5... she lived for years). I don't know why.

20. Come to think of it, I can't keep plants alive either... even the cactus that Cecille gave me back in college :(

21. I saw the movie Twilight 7 times in 2 weeks ;)

22. I have a collection of Philippine coins. I started collecting them when I was about 10 years old.

23. Sometimes, I miss living at my mom's house.

24. Asian and Spanish soap operas on TV never interested me.

25. I took me 3 hours to come up with 25 things.
